Called by many names? Detroit Agate, Fordite, Motor Agate, GM Agate A wonderful and unique by-product of pre 1970 auto production lines, this ?Agate? is formed layer by layer.Paint over-spray would build up on the metal racks that transported car bodies through the paint shop, and into the ovens where each coat was baked hard. Some of the deep layers of this material have been baked over 100 times. The original Fordite (and so the name) was created at the Ford Rouge Plant just outside of Detroit, Michigan. It could also found in other companies auto factories from Leyland England to all parts of the US.Some sharp eyed workers saw the potential and the psychedelic agate grew in popularity in the ?groovy? times of the 60s & 70s. Each of our stones is one of a kind and can not be repeated, as irregularities form during each layer of color & primers. As the process of painting cars has changed with time, this material is getting harder to find over the years.
What a great way to Recycle a piece of Automotive History!
